The Bank of Ghana has officially launched a year-long celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the cedi, Ghana’s national currency and a key symbol of the country’s economic independence.
The Cedi@60 commemoration was launched on Tuesday at the Accra International Conference Centre under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.”
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to grace the event as the Special Guest of Honour.
First introduced on 19 July 1965, the cedi replaced the British pound, representing Ghana’s move towards economic self-determination following independence. Over the past six decades, it has undergone several reforms and redesigns, reflecting both the challenges and progress of Ghana’s economic journey.
The central bank says the anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the currency’s history and renew public confidence in the cedi as a foundation of national identity and stability.
As part of the celebrations, the Bank of Ghana plans to hold regional roadshows and public education campaigns on currency security and proper note handling. There will also be youth competitions in art, music and essays highlighting the cedi’s legacy.
A major highlight will be an international Currency Conference bringing together experts from central banks, academia and the private sector to discuss Ghana’s monetary evolution and the future of its financial system.
