The Ghanaian government has issued a strong advisory to traders and businesses following Burkina Faso’s decision to maintain a ban on the export of key cereals and grains.
In a public announcement, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration confirmed that Burkina Faso has prohibited the export of rice, millet, maize, sorghum, and white beans (cowpea) since December 2023. The ban was reaffirmed in November 2024, with authorities in Burkina Faso reminding buyers that the restrictions remain in effect.
“The Ministry urges all affected stakeholders to be guided by this development,” the statement read, warning that businesses involved in importing these commodities should “comply accordingly to avoid any sanctions and cessations.”
This restriction is expected to impact Ghanaian traders who rely on Burkina Faso for cereal imports, raising concerns over supply shortages and potential price hikes. The government has, however, advised businesses to explore alternative sources to prevent disruptions in local markets.
