President John Dramani Mahama is due to chair a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday to consider recommendations from Ghana’s constitutional review committee.
Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu said a draft position paper had been prepared following what he described as an extensive review by the Attorney General and the President’s legal advisers.
Speaking to Joy News, Mr Kwakye Ofosu said President Mahama had earlier instructed that the committee’s report be studied thoroughly to guide the government’s response to the proposed constitutional reforms.
He said the review process had now been completed and Cabinet would meet to determine the government’s official position.
“On Thursday, 14 May, there will be a special Cabinet session chaired by the President himself to consider the draft position paper,” he said.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, the outcome of the meeting will shape the government’s response to the various proposals submitted under the constitutional review process.
He added that the approved position paper would later be made public to allow citizens to understand the government’s stance on the recommendations.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu noted that, unlike a commission of inquiry which produces a white paper, the constitutional review committee requires the government to issue a position paper.
He said the Cabinet meeting would focus mainly on the constitutional review report, although other matters could also be discussed.
He further stated that, once Cabinet approves the document, the government will proceed to the next stage of implementation, including the establishment of an implementation committee.
The spokesperson said the proposals would be considered individually, with some likely to be accepted, others amended, and some rejected based on feasibility and related considerations.
He added that further public engagement would follow after Cabinet concludes its deliberations.
