The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has condemned Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, for distributing food to voters during the special voting on Monday, December 2, 2024.
Alhassan, who initially denied the claims, later defended her actions after a video surfaced showing her and her constituency women’s organiser handing out food to voters at the Legon Police Station polling centre. The incident has sparked public debate over electoral ethics and voter influence.
In an interview with Bernard Avle on Citi FM’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, December 3, Alhassan explained that her actions were driven by compassion, not malicious intent. She said the incident began when a voter requested water, prompting her women’s organiser to provide it. Observing others in need, the MP then extended the offer to those who appeared tired or hungry.
However, Dr Joseph Whittal, CHRAJ’s Commissioner, expressed concerns over the MP’s conduct, describing it as “tantamount to corruption.” He stated, “It is not right to share food or money with anyone in the queue in preparation to vote. Such actions raise serious integrity issues.”
Dr Whittal added that while similar incidents had not occurred in previous elections, this particular instance had raised alarm. He indicated that CHRAJ would consider the matter when preparing for future elections.
