President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government will now pay teacher and nursing trainees’ allowances through the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).
Speaking during his “Thank You Tour” at the Jubilee Park in Tamale on Saturday, Mahama stated that this move would ensure regular and timely payments, similar to how government workers’ salaries are processed. The decision aims to address the delays that have historically plagued the disbursement of these allowances to students.
Earlier in the day, President Mahama paid a courtesy call on Ya-Na Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon, at the Gbewaa Palace, as part of his visit to the Northern Region following his December election victory.
During his speech, Mahama highlighted key initiatives from the 2025 Budget Statement, including the allocation of funds for providing free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, ensuring they stay in school during their menstrual periods. He also reiterated plans to complete the Eastern Corridor Road, aimed at improving transportation infrastructure.
In his address, Mahama expressed his gratitude to the people of the Northern Region for their strong support for the National Democratic Congress in the December elections.
Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Ali Adolf John, urged the President to consider the establishment of a military barracks in Yendi to help address recurring conflicts along the Eastern Corridor.
