Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM) cases in  Upper West Region have risen sharply from 42 to 60, with the number of deaths now standing at 14. Health officials are growing increasingly concerned about the outbreak, citing factors such as misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and the high cost of medical care as contributing to the rising death toll.

In response, regional health authorities are intensifying efforts to contain the spread of the disease. Measures under consideration include providing free treatment for affected individuals and launching public awareness campaigns to encourage early medical intervention. Health officials stress that early diagnosis and treatment are critical in preventing further fatalities.

Dr. Damien Punguyire, the Regional Health Director, explained that many of the deaths were due to initial misdiagnoses, with many cases being incorrectly identified as malaria. This has led to delays in the appropriate treatment, leaving patients more vulnerable to complications. “By the time people realise their condition is worsening, it’s often too late for effective treatment,” he said.

Dr. Punguyire urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as prolonged fever, neck pain, or body aches. He also advised individuals diagnosed with malaria to return to healthcare facilities if their symptoms persist or worsen within 12 to 24 hours.

To prevent further spread, Dr. Punguyire recommended avoiding overcrowded areas and ensuring adequate water intake to keep the throat moist, which can help prevent bacteria from entering the body.

“With early diagnosis and proper treatment, no one should die from this disease,” he added.
