The Ministry of  Interior has enforced a curfew in Nkwanta Township, located in the Oti Region, following escalating security concerns. The curfew, effective from Tuesday, January 28, 2025, will be in place daily from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM.

This measure was implemented on the recommendation of the Oti Regional Security Council, amid ongoing violence in the area. The government urged residents to resolve disputes through peaceful means and to refrain from the possession of weapons. A ban on arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons remains in effect, with violators facing potential arrest and prosecution.

The violence in Nkwanta began on January 16, 2025, and has resulted in three deaths and numerous injuries. Tensions, believed to be rooted in tribal conflicts between the Challa and Adele groups, and the Achode community, have led to widespread fear and sporadic gunfire. Property damage has been significant, and hundreds of residents have been displaced, seeking refuge in nearby towns such as Pampawie and Ahamansu.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to restoring peace in the region and have called for cooperation from all residents in complying with the curfew and security measures. The government maintains that the curfew is essential for protecting lives and ensuring a secure environment for dispute resolution.
