The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), in partnership with key stakeholders, has successfully intercepted a shipment of opioid drugs valued at approximately GH₵20 million at Tema Port. The seizure marks a significant crackdown on illicit narcotics trafficking in the region.
Among the confiscated drugs were:
- Rahol Tapentadol 250 mg – 26 cartons
- Tafradol Tapentadol 120 mg – 160 cartons
- Timaking Tapentadol 120 mg – 40 cartons
- Loperamide 2 mg – 190 cartons
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate – 320 cartons
The consignment, which was destined for Niger, was flagged during routine checks. The authorities emphasized that the operation was part of a broader effort to curtail the illegal movement of opioids through Ghana.
Minister of Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, addressing the press at the port, reiterated the government’s firm stance against drug trafficking. “While we support legitimate trade, we will not allow Ghana to become a transit point for illicit opioids,” he said. Akandoh further revealed that the President had personally expressed concern over the incident, underscoring the high priority the government places on combating drug-related crimes.
In response to the growing threat, authorities are ramping up efforts to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enhance surveillance at the nation’s ports.
