Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, has publicly taken responsibility for the chaotic scenes that unfolded during parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Appearing before an ad hoc committee investigating the disruption, Dafeamekpor expressed regret, acknowledging the damage caused to Parliament’s reputation and his own role in the incident.
As one of the four MPs suspended for their actions during the turmoil, Dafeamekpor stated he accepted the punishment “in good faith” but admitted he was not proud of his involvement. “Well, not at all, I take responsibility. So when my punishment came, I took it in good faith,” he said. While others felt the blame should not fall on him, Dafeamekpor agreed that leadership should bear responsibility when such events occur. “Consensus building failed for that night,” he noted.
The Majority Chief Whip shifted part of the blame to his counterpart, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, accusing him of rigidly sticking to his own methods and escalating the situation. “If my counterpart wasn’t so insistent on his modus operandi, we wouldn’t have experienced that,” Dafeamekpor remarked, suggesting that Annoh-Dompreh’s approach led to the destruction of parliamentary property.
Reflecting on the events, Dafeamekpor stressed that the lack of consensus was a key factor in the chaos. “A lot of things need to be streamlined,” he added, underscoring the need for more effective communication and cooperation in Parliament moving forward.
