A Ghana Police Service sergeant has accused Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno of instructing him and several other officers to disregard official orders from the Police administration.
In a sworn affidavit filed at the High Court, Sergeant David Ojeyim claims he was directed by DIGP Yohuno to ignore a transfer order issued to him and 10 other officers. The case relates to an intelligence-gathering operation, “Operation D-Day,” in which Ojeyim and others were recruited by ASP Alhaji Jalil Bawa from the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) under Yohuno’s instructions.
Despite ASP Bawa lacking the authority to recruit officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID), Ojeyim and the team complied. However, when Ojeyim was later informed of his transfer out of Accra, he raised concerns, bringing it to the attention of the Deputy IGP. According to Ojeyim, Yohuno directed him and the team to defy the transfer, describing the order as dubious and unjustified.
Ojeyim’s lawsuit, seeking a judicial review of the case, highlights allegations of misconduct by senior police officers in a growing controversy within the Ghana Police Service.
Refusing to obey orders is a serious disciplinary offense within the police service, with potential consequences including charges of mutiny. The integrity of the chain of command is critical to the effective operation of any security organization. If senior officers, such as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP), are instructing subordinates to disobey orders, it raises significant concerns about the discipline and professionalism within the force.
