Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has issued a stern warning to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, urging him not to be drawn into political disputes.
In a session of Parliament on March 5, as Dr. Asiama addressed concerns over the Bank’s new headquarters, Afenyo-Markin reminded the Governor of past criticisms regarding the Bank’s regulatory role. He pointed to the 2015 State of the Nation Address, in which the then-President highlighted concerns about the Bank of Ghana’s supervision of the banking sector. He raised questions about whether current scrutiny of the Bank was selective or politically motivated.
Directly addressing Dr. Asiama, Afenyo-Markin cautioned him against becoming a political pawn. “Mr. Governor, don’t make yourself a tool for political football,” he warned. “The role of the governor of the central bank is vital to the economy. I urge you to stay above the fray and avoid being influenced by political interests.”
The Effutu Member of Parliament emphasized the importance of the governor’s office remaining independent, reiterating that political forces should not undermine the critical financial stability of the country.
The exchange came as Dr. Asiama was scheduled to brief Parliament on the cost of the new BoG headquarters, a topic that has sparked controversy. While the Majority in Parliament defended the procedure followed, the Minority raised objections, claiming it had not adhered to proper protocols.
Afenyo-Markin’s comments underscore the growing tensions around economic issues, as the country grapples with the implications of the Bank of Ghana’s growing role and its transparency in handling public finances.
