Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union (AU) High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has called on Ghanaians to maintain peace and ensure violence-free elections as the country heads to the polls in December 2024. Speaking at the launch of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) election day observation activities in Accra, Dr. Chambas emphasized Ghana’s reputation for peaceful, credible elections and urged citizens not to be complacent.

“We have a track record as one of the countries in Africa and the sub-region known for peaceful and credible elections. Let’s work to keep it that way,” Chambas stated, while stressing the need for vigilance during the electoral process.

The Role of Stakeholders

Dr. Chambas highlighted the shared responsibility of ensuring peaceful elections, calling on both state institutions and civil society organizations to play their part. He praised the Electoral Commission (EC) for its assurances of credibility and transparency and expressed confidence that they would uphold these values to prevent any violence.

“There was violence in the past, but we are determined to go back to normal – where no Ghanaian loses their life because of elections. That is our collective goal,” he added.

Women’s Representation in Parliament

In addition, Dr. Chambas called for increased efforts to improve the representation of women in Ghana’s Parliament, urging voters and political parties to take steps toward gender inclusivity in the 2024 elections.

CODEO’s Contribution to Democracy

Recognizing CODEO’s role in safeguarding Ghana’s democratic integrity, Dr. Chambas urged the group to continue its impartial work. “CODEO’s reputation for incorruptibility and neutrality has been a pillar of our democratic success,” he remarked.

As Ghana prepares to elect a president and 276 Members of Parliament on December 7, Dr. Chambas’s appeal underscores the importance of peaceful participation to preserve the country’s democratic stability.
