President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Dzifa Abla Gomashie, the former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, to lead the ministry in his newly sworn-in government.
Gomashie’s appointment, widely anticipated by stakeholders in Ghana’s creative industries, is seen as a natural progression for the Ketu South MP, given her extensive experience as an actress, cultural advocate, and policymaker.
Having served as Deputy Minister under Mahama’s previous administration, Gomashie played a key role in promoting the country’s tourism and creative sectors. Her background in both the arts and cultural preservation is expected to serve her well in the new role.
Industry experts and cultural commentators have praised her understanding of the sector’s challenges and potential. George Quaye, a prominent industry figure, described her as “the best fit for the Ministry,” citing her passion and track record in advocating for creative professionals.
There is also growing speculation that President Mahama may abolish the Deputy Minister position for Tourism, a move seen as an attempt to streamline the ministry and reduce bureaucratic delays. This proposal has gained support from several industry insiders, who argue it would create a more efficient and focused approach to addressing the sector’s issues.
