The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has determined that Erald Salifu Amoako, the son of prominent cleric Rev. Salifu Amoako, is not currently fit to undergo police questioning. Erald was involved in a serious car accident earlier this month, which reportedly led to the deaths of two young women and has since sparked widespread public outcry.
A medical report, signed by Dr. Fred Salawu of UGMC and dated 29 October 2024, details Erald’s significant injuries, sustained during the crash on 12 October. Following his initial treatment at Legon Hospital, Erald was transferred to UGMC, where he has been managed by both plastic and orthopedic surgeons. The report notes that he sustained an open dislocation of the right ankle, severe facial lacerations, and a brief loss of consciousness.
The statement from UGMC describes multiple surgeries Erald has undergone. These include a debridement and external fixation of his right ankle on 14 October, as well as a flap cover procedure. Surgical findings revealed an open joint dislocation with an unstable joint (Gastillo III B classification) and tears in multiple ligaments. Further surgery on 21 October involved a skin graft to treat a post-traumatic ulcer.
Despite his discharge from hospital on 28 October, the report specifies that Erald is currently mobilising without putting weight on his right leg and will be attending outpatient reviews. Due to his current medical condition, UGMC has concluded that he is “not fit” for police interrogation at this time, though they have assured authorities will be notified when he is medically cleared.
Families of the deceased have voiced concerns over UGMC’s decision, fearing it may delay or impede justice. One relative of a victim, speaking anonymously, expressed frustration: “We are not asking for much—just accountability for the lives lost. If he can be discharged, why can’t he be questioned? It feels like this is tying the hands of the police.”
The case has drawn significant attention, with many in Ghana calling for a fair and transparent investigation. Authorities have not yet provided a timeline for when Erald might be available for questioning.
