In a move to alleviate financial pressures on students, Ghana’s Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the University of Ghana to reduce its residential facility fees by 25%. The new fee will drop from GHC3,000 to GHC2,500 for both incoming and returning students.
The announcement came after a meeting between the Minister, Vice Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, and the Students Representative Council (SRC) on February 6, 2025, at the Ministry in Accra.
“I’ve instructed the Vice Chancellor to lower the residential facility fees by 25% and to engage with students before making any future fee announcements,” said Mr. Iddrisu.
In response, Vice Chancellor Prof. Amfo confirmed the University’s commitment to the fee reduction, assuring that going forward, students will be better involved in decisions regarding fees. “We have listened to both the Minister and our students, and we can reduce the fees by 25% across the board. We’ll ensure better engagement with the student body in the future,” she said.
While students have welcomed the reduction, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, President of the SRC, expressed concerns about those who have already paid the higher fee. “We appreciate the reduction, as it will ease some of the burden on our parents, but we are calling for a refund for those who have already paid,” he urged.
According to the University’s management, 80% of students have already paid their residential facility fees.
