The Ghana Police Service has assured journalists of their safety during the country’s 2024 General Elections.
Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Accra on Wednesday, 20th November 2024, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare emphasized the critical role of the media in ensuring a transparent and peaceful electoral process.
The meeting, held at the Police Headquarters, brought together senior journalists, editors, and top police officials. Dr. Dampare underscored Ghana’s reputation as a democratic leader in Africa, crediting this success to strong partnerships between the media and state institutions such as the Police Service.
As part of security measures for the elections, the Police announced the introduction of liaison officers for media houses across the country. These officers will serve as direct points of contact between the Police and media outlets to address security concerns and protect journalists.
A dedicated toll-free hotline is also being set up in collaboration with telecommunications companies, enabling the public to share information with the Police.
Dr. Dampare called on journalists to uphold professional standards in their reporting, urging them to avoid spreading misinformation that could disrupt national stability. He stressed that the media’s role as the “fourth estate” is crucial to fostering trust and order during the elections.
“The safety of journalists is our priority, and we are committed to ensuring you can carry out your duties without fear, no matter where you are reporting from,” Dr. Dampare said.
The IGP concluded by encouraging all stakeholders to work together to make the 2024 elections a peaceful and historic milestone in Ghana’s democratic journey.
