The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has destroyed defective ballot papers intended for the Ahafo and Volta Regions after detecting serialization errors.

The flawed ballots were destroyed on Thursday, 21 November, under the close supervision of police officers and representatives from various political parties. The errors were identified before the ballots were dispatched, prompting the EC to halt their transfer.

In response, the EC commissioned Buck Press and Acts Commercials to reprint the ballots, ensuring that the new versions are error-free. The commission has stressed that its internal quality control mechanisms detected the problem, dismissing claims that political parties were responsible for uncovering the defect.

However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contested this, asserting that their representatives first raised the issue, leading to corrective actions.

The incident comes as the EC ramps up preparations for Ghana’s 2024 general elections, with officials pledging transparency and accuracy to maintain public confidence in the process.
