A major fire has caused extensive damage to several wooden and container-based structures along the Agbogba to Ritz Junction Road in Accra, resulting in the destruction of numerous businesses and homes.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded swiftly to the blaze, working under challenging conditions to control the fire. Alex King Nartey, a spokesperson for the GNFS, highlighted the rapid spread of the fire, which was fueled by the highly flammable nature of the wooden and container structures clustered together in the area.
“The proximity of the wooden and container buildings contributed to the fast spread of the fire,” Nartey said.
While at least 12 structures were partially damaged, firefighters managed to save more than 50 buildings in the vicinity, preventing further losses. However, the operation faced numerous obstacles, including the difficulty of accessing locked containers that had air conditioning units and reinforced doors. Additionally, electricity poles in the area posed significant risks, with firefighters encountering electric shocks during their efforts to suppress the flames.
“The fire is now under control,” Nartey confirmed, adding that efforts to prevent any reignition were still ongoing. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The incident highlights the risks associated with densely packed areas containing a high concentration of flammable materials, raising concerns over fire safety and emergency response preparedness in similar zones across Accra.
