Food Shortages in Ghana’s Senior High Schools Linked to Supplier Concerns

Food shortages in Ghana’s Senior High Schools (SHSs) have been attributed to suppliers’ concerns over the future of their contracts under the School Feeding Programme, according to Kofi Asare, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch.

Asare explained that uncertainty surrounding the continuation of contracts under the new administration has made suppliers hesitant to provide foodstuffs, leading to the current shortages.

“The immediate problem is the reluctance of suppliers, who are unsure about the future of their contracts,” Asare said, noting that liquidity challenges also play a role in the crisis.

He suggested that a government statement assuring suppliers their contracts will not be automatically terminated could help resolve the issue. “Such a statement would provide some comfort and potentially reverse the current situation,” Asare added.

The Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) has called on parents and guardians to support feeding efforts, as the shortage continues to affect students, particularly in some regions.
