Former VOA Journalist Shaka Ssali Dies, Leaving a Lasting Legacy

The African journalism community is in mourning following the death of Shaka Ssali, the former host of Voice of America’s (VOA) flagship program, Straight Talk Africa.

Ssali, who was renowned across the continent for his incisive journalism, passed away at the age of 68. His death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, friends, and admirers alike.

For more than two decades, Shaka Ssali’s voice was a fixture in African homes, particularly through his role on Straight Talk Africa, where he tackled critical issues affecting the continent, from politics and corruption to human rights and social justice. Born in Uganda, Ssali began his career in journalism in the 1970s, working as a reporter and editor for Ugandan newspapers before joining VOA in 1994. He hosted Straight Talk Africa from its inception in 2000 until his retirement in 2023, becoming one of Africa’s most prominent media personalities.

Over the course of his career, Ssali earned numerous awards for his contributions to journalism and broadcast media. His legacy is one of bold, fearless reporting and a deep commitment to addressing the continent’s most pressing issues.
