The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has suspended all Ghana Premier League matches following a violent incident in Nsoatre that led to the death of an Asante Kotoko fan.

The incident occurred during the match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko on matchday 19 of the league, when a violent clash broke out at the stadium, resulting in the tragic death of Francis Frimpong, also known as Pooley, a passionate Kotoko supporter.

In response, the GFA has postponed the upcoming round of matches (Matchday 20) to allow time for a thorough investigation. The association stated that this decision would give them an opportunity to consult with key stakeholders and evaluate the aftermath of the violence.

“The move will allow the GFA to assess the situation, engage with relevant parties, and develop measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” a GFA statement said. “We are committed to improving the football experience in Ghana and ensuring that such acts of violence have no place in our game.”

The disturbing incident unfolded when a brawl erupted during the match. An eyewitness, who was seated in the VIP section near former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, described the chaotic scene. The violence intensified when Kotoko leadership members, including Kwasi Appiah, tried to intervene but were warned of the volatile situation. Sources allege that Baffour Awuah’s frustration with the situation led him to signal the fans to continue their unrest, further escalating the violence.

Appiah was reportedly pelted with water before leaving the stadium, and while peace seemed to return for a brief moment, tragedy struck when Frimpong, also known as Pooley, tragically lost his life.

The GFA’s suspension of the league highlights the severity of the situation, with officials pledging swift action to ensure justice and prevent further violence. The death has sent shockwaves through the Ghanaian football community, with many calling for stronger measures to protect fans and players alike.
