Ghana boxing legend Clement Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey passes away

Ghanaian boxing icon Clement Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey has passed away in the United Kingdom on Saturday, November 2, 2024, as confirmed by the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF).

He was 54 years old, although the details surrounding his death have not been disclosed.

Ike Quartey had an impressive professional boxing career that spanned from 1988 to 2006, during which he fought in 42 matches. His record boasts 37 victories, 4 defeats, and 1 draw, with a remarkable 31 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

He reached the pinnacle of his career by holding the WBA welterweight title for four consecutive years, from 1994 to 1998, and was renowned for his powerful jabs.

One of the standout moments in his career was his 1999 bout against celebrated American boxer Oscar De La Hoya at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

In addition to his professional achievements, Quartey also earned a silver medal in the men’s Light Welterweight (63.5 kg) category at the 1980 Summer Olympics held in Moscow, Russia.
