Ghanaian authorities have intercepted a shipment of firearms and ammunition concealed in a 40-foot container at Tema Port.

The container, with the identification number MEDU4496951, arrived from the United States and was falsely declared to contain vehicles and personal effects. However, a thorough inspection by the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on 4 November uncovered 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition hidden inside suitcases.

The Commissioner of Customs, Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, confirmed the seizure and revealed that arrests have been made as investigations continue to determine the full details of the shipment and its intended recipients.

“Anyone importing ammunition without the necessary license or permit is committing a crime and will face the full force of the law,” he warned.

The individuals linked to the shipment, including the agent and consignees, have been granted bail.

The Customs Division has reiterated its commitment to protecting Ghana’s borders and preventing the illegal importation of firearms and other contraband.
