Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to deploy community health volunteers nationwide to help with early disease detection through regular house-to-house health monitoring.
Speaking about the initiative, Mr. Mahama said the goal is to prevent minor health issues from worsening by catching them early, thus improving overall health outcomes and reducing costly hospital visits.
“We are going to have community health volunteers in every community,” he said, explaining that the volunteers will engage residents to check on their health and identify conditions such as breast and cervical cancers. Cases requiring attention will be referred to the nearest health facility for further care.
This initiative is part of Mr. Mahama’s broader health strategy, which includes launching a “Ghana Medical Care Trust,” also known as “Mahama Cares.” This trust will fund the management of chronic diseases, including kidney disease, diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease.
Mr. Mahama is continuing his campaign tour in the Western Region, meeting with local chiefs and supporters, while his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, is touring the North East and Savannah regions.
