The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that it will continue to back coach Otto Addo, despite the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – a setback that marks the team’s first absence from the tournament in 20 years.
Under Addo’s leadership, Ghana played six matches in the AFCON qualifiers, but failed to secure a win, ultimately missing out on the competition. However, the GFA has decided to retain the coach, with Dr. Randy Abbey, an Executive Council member and Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, affirming that Addo will stay in charge.
“The GFA has made the decision,” Abbey confirmed during an interview on Original FM.
While Addo’s position is secure, the GFA plans to make changes to his backroom staff. Assistant coaches Joseph Lauman, John Paintsil, and goalkeepers’ coach Fatau Dauda are likely to be let go as part of the restructure.
Despite the disappointment in the AFCON qualifiers, Addo led Ghana to vital victories over Mali and the Central African Republic, keeping the country’s hopes alive for qualification to the 2026 World Cup. The GFA is optimistic that Addo can guide the team through the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, which begin in March.
“Now, the focus shifts to the World Cup qualifiers,” Abbey said. “With the right adjustments, we believe we can turn things around and get the Black Stars back on track.”
Addo, who took charge in early 2024 following Ghana’s underwhelming 2023 AFCON campaign, is under contract with the GFA, which includes an option for a two-year extension. Despite a rocky second stint, the GFA remains committed to his long-term vision for the team.
