The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has been thrown into confusion as two factions within the party have sent contradictory letters to the Electoral Commission (EC) regarding the party’s stance on the December 7 general election.

In one letter, the GFP’s General Secretary, George Afful, informed the EC that the party had nominated Philip Kwabena Agyemang, also known as Roman Fada, as their presidential candidate following the passing of their previous nominee. Afful’s letter stated, “I hereby write to inform the Commission that the party has duly nominated Mr Philip Appiah Kubi to replace our late Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections.”

He further assured that Agyemang’s nomination would be formally submitted in time, in accordance with election regulations.

However, a separate letter from the party’s National Organiser, Richard Botchway, contradicted this position, stating that the GFP would not participate in the upcoming elections. Botchway’s letter indicated that after consultations with the family of the party’s founder, Akua Donkor, the party had resolved to withdraw from the presidential race.

“We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections,” Botchway’s letter read, adding an apology for any inconvenience caused to the EC’s electoral calendar.

This internal rift has left the party’s participation in the December 7 elections uncertain, posing potential implications for the party’s standing in Ghana’s political landscape.
