Ghana Labour Court Blocks Civil Service Strike Amid Salary Row

The National Labour Commission (NLC) in Ghana has secured a court order to halt a strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), following demands for a revised salary structure.

CLOGSAG initiated the strike on November 1, after the government missed an October 31 deadline to address what the union calls a “prolonged delay” in finalising a new salary framework, which they hoped to implement from January 2025. The association claims discussions with the government have stalled without any “concrete offer.”

However, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has countered that CLOGSAG has not formally responded to a recent government proposal for the new pay structure.

On November 7, the NLC requested an interim injunction to suspend the strike, arguing the industrial action was premature. The Accra High Court granted the injunction for a period of 10 days, after which the commission will need to return to court to extend the order if needed.
