The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is closely monitoring a rise in respiratory infections, particularly those caused by the Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV), which has been spreading across China and other regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

In a statement, the GHS reassured the public that the outbreak does not involve a new virus, unlike the COVID-19 pandemic. The GHS noted that hMPV-related respiratory infections typically see an uptick during the winter months, a seasonal trend that has been observed in past years.

Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, emphasized that the situation in Ghana remains under control. “Samples collected from respiratory sites across all 16 regions of Ghana have not shown any unusual pathogens, including hMPV,” he said.

The GHS has taken precautionary measures, working in collaboration with local and international partners to strengthen surveillance and enhance laboratory testing capabilities. These efforts are in line with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations.

The GHS has also launched public health awareness campaigns, urging citizens and healthcare professionals to adhere to preventive measures, including practicing good respiratory hygiene, wearing face masks when necessary, and seeking early medical attention if symptoms arise.

The service assured the public that it is prepared for any potential increase in cases and will provide regular updates on the evolving situation.
