President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday announced that Ghana will offer 1,000 tertiary education scholarships to students from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in a move aimed at deepening regional integration and fostering unity among West Africa’s youth.

The announcement came during the launch of ECOWAS’s 50th anniversary celebrations, held in Accra on April 22. Speaking at the event, Mr. Mahama described the initiative as a “gesture of solidarity” and a strategic investment in regional cooperation.

“To mark this moment and strengthen regional bonds, Ghana is offering 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students from across the ECOWAS sub-region to study in our universities,” he said. “This is not just a gesture, it is an act of solidarity—an embrace of a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners but as partners.”

The scholarships are part of Ghana’s broader efforts to reinforce ECOWAS’s foundational principles of unity, dialogue, and peace amid rising regional challenges, including insecurity and political instability in parts of West Africa.

“ECOWAS must remain a forum for listening, a space for healing, a home for visionary African-led solidarity and diplomacy,” President Mahama said, urging member states to deepen cooperation and position ECOWAS as a model for continental integration and peaceful coexistence.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the ECOWAS mission, calling for the bloc to serve not only as an economic and political union but also as a diplomatic anchor for Africa’s future.
