The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has indefinitely adjourned the House following the absence of members from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Majority caucus, leaving lawmakers without business to discuss.
The recall session was scheduled at the request of the Majority caucus, with an agenda expected to address several pressing national issues. However, their absence stalled proceedings, as the Business Committee did not meet to prepare an agenda for discussion.
Addressing Parliament, Speaker Bagbin voiced disappointment over the situation, noting, “Matters they wanted us to handle, which I admitted for consideration from the Business Committee, are not on the Order Paper. There is no Order Paper for today because the Business Committee could not meet due to the absence of those who requested the recall.”
Bagbin explained that although the House had enough members for a quorum, there was no agenda for lawmakers to adopt or deliberate on. He further stated, “Without the Business Committee’s input, we are compelled to adjourn. Considering the current challenges, a day-to-day adjournment is not practical, so I will adjourn indefinitely.”
The adjournment underscores ongoing tensions between the majority and Minority caucuses, which have disrupted parliamentary proceedings in recent weeks. With the indefinite adjournment, it remains unclear when Parliament will reconvene, leaving the legislative agenda in limbo.
