The Greater Accra Regional Fire Service (GNFS) has cautioned victims of the recent fire at Kantamanto market against hastily rebuilding their structures. The devastating blaze destroyed thousands of shops, and there have been attempts to reconstruct the affected buildings without proper safety measures.

At a press briefing in Accra, Greater Accra Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, ACFO II Rashid Nisawu, urged market traders to seek professional advice on fire safety before beginning any reconstruction. He warned that without proper precautions, they risk facing another fire incident in the future.

“I have spoken to the authorities and advised them that if they proceed without consulting professionals, they may end up telling the same story if another fire occurs,” Nisawu said. “Even if reconstruction is necessary, they should seek advice on standardized structures and suitable materials.”

Nisawu also addressed accusations from some traders who claimed that fire officers had poured petrol on the fire to worsen the blaze. He strongly denied the allegations, stating, “Why would anyone put petrol on a fire? It would only result in harm to those involved. Such claims are unfortunate.”

The fire service has reiterated the importance of safety precautions to prevent further incidents.
