The government has strongly condemned the attempted arrest of a JoyNews reporter and the reported assault of an eyewitness by a soldier during a demolition exercise at a warehouse linked to businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, described the actions of the soldier as “utterly unacceptable” and reaffirmed President John Mahama’s administration’s commitment to press freedom and journalist safety.

“I am directed by President John Dramani Mahama to unequivocally reaffirm his unwavering commitment to the freedom and safety of journalists,” the statement read. “A free and unfettered press is a cornerstone of our democracy, essential for accountability, transparency, and informed public discourse.”
The government assured Ghanaians that swift action will be taken, stressing that the rights of all citizens must be respected. “Government has accordingly directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to investigate the incident and ensure that the appropriate punishment is immediately imposed,” the statement added.
The incident occurred during coverage of a demolition exercise at McDan’s warehouse, where JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony was allegedly manhandled by soldiers while attempting to interview an eyewitness. He was also detained alongside McDan and three others, who were allegedly forced to kneel at gunpoint.
Authorities have pledged that disciplinary and punitive measures will follow to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents.
