The Ministry of Interior has announced the renewal of the curfew in Bawku Municipality and surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, following continuing security concerns. The curfew, effective from January 27, 2025, will be in place from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am daily.
The extension was confirmed in a press release by Mrs. Doreen P Annan, Chief Director of the Ministry of Interior. The government has urged local leaders, including Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, and youth, to maintain calm and resolve disputes through peaceful means, emphasizing the need for non-violent approaches to address ongoing challenges in the region.
The authorities also reiterated a total ban on the carrying of firearms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons in the affected areas, warning that individuals found with such items would face arrest and prosecution.
This move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Bawku and Nalerigu on January 14, 2025. During the visit, he engaged with key stakeholders and conflict factions in an effort to foster dialogue and seek a long-term resolution to the region’s long-standing security issues.
