The Office of the President has announced an immediate suspension of contract appointments for retired public service employees, marking a significant shift in public sector employment policy.

A directive issued on April 2, 2025, and signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, confirmed that all post-retirement contract appointments are now on hold. The statement, which was circulated to public institutions, emphasized that “requests for such appointments will no longer be considered.”

The new directive has raised questions about the future of post-retirement employment in the public sector, as it affects a number of pending and ongoing contract arrangements across various government agencies. While the announcement did not provide explicit reasons for the suspension, it signals a potential overhaul of the longstanding practice of granting contract positions to retired civil servants.

Public institutions have been urged to ensure full compliance with the directive, with the presidency stressing the importance of immediate adherence to the policy change.

The suspension is expected to have a far-reaching impact on the public sector’s workforce strategy, potentially reshaping the landscape of post-retirement employment in government.
