President John Mahama has revealed that the government is in discussions with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the controversial anti-LGBTQI bill as a government-sponsored piece of legislation, rather than a private member’s bill.
Speaking during a Fellowship with the Clergy at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, February 28, 2025, Mr. Mahama reaffirmed his Christian stance, stating that he believes in only two genders: male and female. He also voiced support for marriage exclusively between a man and a woman.
“I’ve spoken with the Speaker about renewing the expired Proper Family Values Bill, and I believe it should be introduced by the government,” Mahama stated. “My leadership must reflect the values of the people I govern, and on this, I stand firm.”
The original bill, which sought to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy, was introduced as a private member’s bill but failed to receive Presidential assent under former President Akufo-Addo due to ongoing legal challenges. It has since expired, requiring reintroduction for further action.
Earlier this year,President Mahama suggested the bill should be brought forward as a government initiative, with full consultation from all stakeholders.
The Anti-LGBTQI bill remains a deeply divisive issue in Ghanaian politics, with strong support from religious groups and significant opposition from human rights advocates.
