The  government has ordered the immediate closure of Gumah FM in Bawku, citing national security concerns raised by the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC).

The decision follows a review of recent security developments in Bawku and surrounding areas in the North East Region during an emergency meeting on February 11, 2025.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, intelligence reports revealed that Gumah FM had been used as a platform to incite violence, disrupt public order, and escalate regional tensions.

In response, the Ministry invoked Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which grants the National Communications Authority (NCA) the authority to suspend or revoke frequency licenses for reasons of national security or public safety.

As per the directive, Gumah FM is required to cease all operations immediately. The Ministry also pledged to monitor the situation closely, warning that any attempts to establish alternative platforms for promoting violence or instability would be swiftly addressed.

The government emphasized its commitment to national security and public order, urging all media outlets to adhere strictly to their operational licenses and act responsibly. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
