The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on February 19, 2025, which left a bystander injured.

In a statement issued on February 20, the GRA confirmed that it was looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and assured the public that a full inquiry was underway. The authority expressed sympathy for the individual affected and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all stakeholders.

Customs officers at the checkpoint had received intelligence about a suspected smuggling operation involving a Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being brought into Ghana from Togo.

As the officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, the occupants fled, prompting the officers to fire warning shots. However, a stray bullet struck a nearby bystander. The individual was promptly taken to Sogakope Comboni Hospital and is reported to be recovering.

The GRA reaffirmed its responsibility to protect national revenue and border security, and promised to implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
