On Wednesday, March 5, a group of unidentified gunmen reportedly entered the residence of former Hohoe Member of Parliament, John Peter Amewu.

According to Mr. Amewu, one of the attackers, claimed to be a bailiff acting on “orders from above” and alleged that Amewu’s election as an MP in 2020 was illegitimate.

Mr.Amewu, who was not present at the time of the incident, stated that the gunmen fired warning shots, leading to a confrontation with some of his supporters.

The intruders reportedly insisted that Mr.Amewu’s election was invalid and that the Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) under which he was elected was unconstitutional.

While authorities have yet to release additional information on the incident, Mr.Amewu, speaking in an interview on Citi FM, expressed concern over the implications for Ghana’s democratic processes. Despite the incident, he confirmed that his supporters in Hohoe have reported the matter to local authorities.

In an unexpected move, Amewu has declined police protection following the attack.
