Haruna Iddrisu, Education Minister-Designate, has voiced strong opposition to LGBTQ+ practices, asserting that they are incompatible with his personal values and religious beliefs.

During a meeting with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference in Accra on January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama proposed a shift in the approach to the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, suggesting that it be introduced as a government-sponsored initiative instead of a private member’s bill. Mahama argued that government backing would enhance the bill’s legitimacy and improve its chances of passing through Parliament.

In his appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 20, Iddrisu made it clear that the issue conflicted with his Muslim faith. “It’s a cultural wrong, and, with my religion as a Muslim, you know where I stand on this matter. It is repugnant to my Muslim values and ethics,” he said.

Iddrisu also emphasized that many Ghanaians would prefer their children to be raised in a manner that aligns with traditional cultural values. “We’re a country, we define our values, both social and cultural, and we should expect all other persons to respect those values,” he added.

The Education Minister-Designate concluded by underlining the importance of preserving Ghana’s cultural values within the bounds of its constitution.
