The  Ministry of Health has handed over a substantial consignment of medical equipment and supplies to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). The move comes as the hospital grapples with staff protests, resource shortages, and strained relations with top health officials.

The presentation, made on April 24, includes a wide array of essential items: from advanced diagnostic tools to ICU ventilators and basic hospital furniture. Among the highlights are two Vinno Ultrasound Scanners, defibrillators, ECG machines, infant incubators, and a range of life-support systems. Consumables like 20,000 face masks, surgical sutures, Ambu bags, and emergency trolleys were also part of the package.

But the delivery is more than just a logistics upgrade—it’s a strategic gesture at a moment of deep unrest. TTH has recently been in the headlines following a dramatic standoff between medical staff and Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, with doctors suspending emergency and outpatient services over what they described as a “hostile working environment” and dire working conditions.

During the handover ceremony, Minister Akandoh acknowledged the hardship healthcare workers face daily, but stopped short of offering direct apologies. Instead, he called for solidarity within the health sector, urging doctors, nurses, and pharmacists to collaborate in making the best of limited resources.

“Every Ghanaian life matters,” he said, emphasizing the need for policies and practices that put patient wellbeing at the forefront. Akandoh positioned his leadership style as one of humility and partnership, but also made clear that systemic change won’t come overnight.
