An Accra High Court has ordered the release of withheld West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, dismissing an application from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to delay the decision.

WAEC had withheld the results of about 10,000 candidates, citing alleged exam malpractices and irregularities, following an announcement in December 2024. In response, four affected students filed a petition, leading the court to rule in their favor on January 30, 2025.

The court instructed WAEC to release the results without any annotations, stating that the council’s reasons for withholding the results were inconsistent and unclear. The ruling also noted that keeping the results back could hinder the academic and professional prospects of the students involved.

Despite the court’s ruling, WAEC sought a stay of execution, requesting a delay pending an appeal. However, on February 20, 2025, Justice Ali Baba Abature rejected the application, citing insufficient justification from WAEC. The court also fined the examination body GHS 5,000.
