Dr. Mary Awusi, chief executive of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, issued a public apology to Apostle Eric Nyamekye, chairman of the Church of Pentecost, after remarks she made about his stance on illegal mining which has triggered public debate.
Speaking in an interview on Accra FM on Friday, Dr. Awusi said her earlier comments, delivered during a radio appearance, may have been poorly received and clarified that no offense was intended. She acknowledged Apostle Nyamekye’s standing, describing his leadership role as one that reflects significant dedication and spiritual commitment.
“If in the course of expressing my opinion I said something that wasn’t appropriate, I apologize,” she said, adding that her response had been shaped by her interpretation of his remarks on illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The exchange followed comments by Apostle Nyamekye at the Church’s 48th General Conference, where he drew attention to the environmental and social consequences of illegal mining, including its impact on religious practices such as water baptism.
