Nigerian rapper and singer Ice Prince, born Panshak Zamani, has shared insights into his challenging six-day experience at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos. His incarceration in September 2022 followed allegations of assaulting a police officer.
In a recent interview, Ice Prince described his time in the facility as “horrible,” emphasizing that he received no preferential treatment and was treated like any other inmate. He stated, “It’s a prison, so there was no preferential treatment. I’m not talking about a police cell.”
Reflecting on the emotional and social challenges of incarceration, the rapper noted the unexpected bonds he formed with fellow inmates, likening prison to “a different institution of higher learning.” He expressed empathy for those in similar situations, saying, “I don’t pray for my worst enemy to experience it. There are so many innocent people in there.”
Ice Prince clarified that his arrest stemmed from a misunderstanding, explaining that he was joking with the police officer when he drove away during a stop-and-search operation. He concluded by urging caution, reminding others that “mistakes can take you there.”
