The Ghana Police Service has arrested Ignatius Baffour Awuah and two others following a violent incident during a football match between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC, which led to one death.
The incident unfolded on February 2, 2025, at Nsoatre in the Bono Region. Police have identified the other arrested suspects as Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph, both of whom are also in custody and assisting with investigations.
A search of one suspect’s residence led to the discovery of two bloodstained dresses and an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition. The police have yet to confirm how these items are linked to the events of the day.
The match, which saw Kotoko suffer a 1-0 defeat, was marked by a series of confrontations, both on the pitch and in the stands. Players received four red cards for their conduct, and what followed after the final whistle was nothing short of chaos. Rival supporters clashed violently, resulting in the tragic death of a fan.
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and to the leadership of Asante Kotoko FC. A special team from the Criminal Investigation Department has been deployed to support the Bono Regional Police Command in their ongoing efforts to piece together what led to the deadly violence.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing concerns over crowd control and security at Ghana’s football matches, as the authorities vow to take swift action in addressing the matter.
