Former South African President Jacob Zuma has suggested that the re-election of Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama marks a shift in how elections are perceived across Africa.

President Mahama won the 2024 elections, defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Zuma, who attended Mahama’s inauguration on January 7, 2025, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome in an interview with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV’s The Point of View.

“I know him [Mahama], I know his views, I know what he is capable of doing, and I was very happy he won,” Zuma said. He went on to suggest that the result reflected a changing attitude towards elections in Africa, adding, “It indicated that Africans are beginning to look at elections differently.”

Reflecting on the inauguration, Zuma described the jubilant atmosphere at Independence Square, saying, “There was almost no place to put your feet, because people were so happy. It was clear from the scene that the people of Ghana were celebrating.”
