Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a spokesperson for former President John Dramani Mahama, has extended an open invitation to independent presidential candidate Alan Kyerematen to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 general elections.

In a social media post, Mogtari described the NDC as the “winning side” and encouraged Mr Kyerematen to align with the party’s presidential candidate, John Mahama, to defy critics and secure electoral victory.

Her comments come amidst political tensions following Mr Kyerematen’s criticism of former President John Agyekum Kufuor. Mr Kyerematen, a former member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accused Mr Kufuor of tarnishing his legacy by endorsing Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer for the upcoming elections.

Speaking during an interview on Oyerepa TV on Monday, 18 November, Mr Kyerematen argued that Mr Kufuor’s endorsement had opened the door for political disrespect from party supporters.

“What he has done has created a big blot on his political career. You see how people are speaking against him and disrespecting him. For someone with a distinguished career in politics, how do you involve yourself in such matters and expose yourself to such criticism?” Mr Kyerematen said. He urged the former president to refrain from making further political endorsements.

Responding to Mr Kyerematen’s comments on her social media platform, Mogtari said: “Alan Cash, take heart. I can feel your pain and understand your frustration, but please join the winning side—John Mahama and the NDC—so that together we can put all your naysayers to shame! Good morning, Sir! Have a great day!”

Mr Kyerematen, who broke away from the NPP to launch an independent presidential bid, is yet to respond to Mogtari’s invitation.
