Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to President John Mahama, has expressed optimism that the warm reception given to Burkinabe leader Ibrahim Traoré could lead to positive political outcomes, including a potential shift towards democracy.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Tuesday, January 8, Mogtari suggested that Ghana’s history of peaceful transitions might inspire Traoré to reconsider his military leadership and embrace a democratic path. “Ghana has its own history, and if there is anyone who can encourage him to return to democracy, it is us,” she said, noting that the warm welcome could help him see the benefits of pursuing leadership through democratic elections.
Mogtari’s remarks came after public concerns were raised about Traoré’s decision to attend the inauguration ceremony while still carrying a sidearm. The Burkinabe leader was seen exchanging pleasantries with Ghana’s newly elected president while wearing his weapon.
Mogtari acknowledged the security protocols in place at the event, which included thorough checks for all invited guests, but expressed discomfort with the sight of Traoré’s weapon. “I also found it a bit awkward when I saw the gun on him,” she said.
Her comments reflect ongoing discussions about the role of the military in Burkina Faso’s political future and the potential influence of Ghana’s democratic example.
