Michael Agyekum Addo, the founder of Ghana’s KAMA Group of Companies, has died at the age of 74. Reports indicate he passed away on Friday, 1 November.

A prominent figure in Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry, Addo began his journey in 1983 by operating a small pharmacy in Kumasi. Three years later, he expanded his operations, manufacturing medical products from his garage—a move that eventually led to the establishment of the KAMA Group of Companies. The conglomerate, now with several wholesale and retail outlets nationwide, included a pharmaceutical production company among its subsidiaries, although it has since been divested.

Beyond pharmaceuticals, Addo’s ventures spanned across micro-finance, real estate, and conference management. He also founded the Kama Education Project, a training initiative aimed at fostering entrepreneurship skills in students. An advocate for education, Addo authored multiple books to inspire young people with a “can-do” spirit.

Addo’s contributions were recognised in 2005 when he received an honorary doctorate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). In 2022, he was also one of 88 PhD graduates from the University of Ghana.

In addition to his business and educational pursuits, Addo held the title of Nkabomhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area in Koforidua, underscoring his connection to his community.
