A devastating fire that tore through Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District has left one person dead and more than 30,000 traders severely impacted. Over 7,000 shops were destroyed in the blaze, which broke out at dawn on Thursday, January 2.

The fire’s spread was exacerbated by water shortages and logistical challenges, which hampered firefighting efforts and allowed the damage to worsen.

Samuel Amoah, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, described the aftermath as heartbreaking, telling JoyNews on January 3 that many traders had lost both their homes and livelihoods. He added that their only hope now is for the market to be rebuilt so they can resume their work.

Traders are already working to clear debris and rebuild their stalls, though Mr Amoah appealed to both the outgoing and incoming governments for assistance in restoring the market.

He also urged authorities to remove individuals who have been sleeping in the market, a situation that has compounded the challenges. Additionally, he suggested that the fire might have been a planned attack, citing information he had received.

As efforts to rebuild continue, the market community remains hopeful that government support will aid in the recovery.
