KATH suspends surgeries amid pngoing water crisis

Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, have been forced to suspend all surgical procedures due to a severe water shortage that has been affecting the facility for over a week.

Hospital officials have confirmed that the lack of water has made performing surgeries unsafe, forcing them to halt all operations temporarily. The Komfo Anokye Doctors Association issued a memo on March 25, outlining the decision and urging management to prioritize patient safety.

Water is a vital resource in medical procedures, from maintaining hygiene to supporting critical patient care, and the ongoing shortage has disrupted these essential functions. The memo, issued by the hospital’s Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate, states, “Until water supply is restored, no new surgical cases will be admitted.”

Despite efforts to manage the crisis, the situation has reached a critical point, jeopardizing both patient safety and overall healthcare services. Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, expressed his regret over the inconvenience caused by the suspension but reassured the public that the medical staff remains committed to providing care for existing patients.

The association is calling on hospital management to explore alternative water sources and provide regular updates on the ongoing situation.
